About

Craig Barrow is a designer working across objects, sculpture and spaces. His practice is rooted in close observation of patterns, materials and relationships; both human and natural, and explores how things are made, how systems behave and how people interact with objects and environments.

Through processes of abstraction, imitation and re-contextualisation, these observations evolve into new forms and environments, becoming the basis of his work.

Born in Nottingham, UK, Craig studied 3D Design at the University of Brighton and now lives and works in Berlin.

Well Read

Spatial concept and design for WELL READ bookstore in Bairro de Santana Lisbon.

The design drew inspiration from Mesoamerican pyramids and temples, with their intricate carvings and layered structures. These ancient monuments offered a poetic and visual connection to books, resembling both their depth of knowledge and the look of stacked pages. Using this as a very loose starting point, we developed a design framework and divided the space into distinct areas.

Each of the three rooms was designed to have its own character and function, while maintaining a cohesive feel throughout. The goal was to make each room visually engaging without overwhelming the relatively small space, ensuring the store remained tranquil and inviting. In the back two rooms, we kept the focus on a single feature: the green amphitheater in one, and the grey bookshelves and walls in the other. For the front room, where we had a bit more space to play, we incorporated multiple smaller elements; mirrored surfaces, the stepped green book table, the counter, the large wall shelf. We then echoed some of these elements in subtle ways across the other rooms, creating a harmonious flow throughout the space.
